Self-Ligating
Braces.
What self-ligating braces are
Self-ligating braces use a specialized bracket that holds the archwire in place with a built-in clip or door — no elastic ties required. That small design change has big clinical benefits: teeth move more freely, the system generates less friction, and appointments are shorter.
How they compare
Compared with traditional tie-ligated braces, self-ligating systems typically need fewer adjustment visits and are often more comfortable between appointments. They also make home care a bit easier — fewer nooks for food and plaque to hide in.
Our preferred self-ligating system at SmileHaus is the Pitts21 bracket, developed by OC Orthodontics. Pitts21 is itself a self-ligating system — if you've read about "modern braces" elsewhere, Pitts21 is how we deliver them. See the Pitts21 page for the full system detail.
Who it's for
Teens and adults whose case calls for fixed braces rather than aligners — particularly complex bite corrections, significant rotations, and cases needing precise root-angle control. Dr. Thompson will confirm whether self-ligating braces are the right appliance for your case during your complimentary consultation.
Why SmileHaus
Dr. Thompson plans every case personally, chooses the appliance system that fits the clinical goal, and stays with each patient from bonding through retention. Every visit, every time.
